STYLE GURU BIO: Chelsea Candelario

I’m Chelsea Candelario and I’m a senior at SUNY New Paltz. I’m a Journalism major with a minor in Creative Writing. Although I attend SUNY New Paltz, I’m a commuter student from New York City.

When I was eight years old, I joined a sewing club that taught me how to hand-sew for the first time. I was able to make a skirt and vest made out of silk fabric all from hand-sewing! Aside from learning these basic skills and collecting every fashion magazine I could get my hands on, I knew that I wanted to be a fashion designer.

I was occasionally sketching but it wasn’t until I went to high school that I majored in fashion design and learned how to use a machine. All throughout high school, I learned how to use fashion machinery, sketch better and many more skills. By senior year, I was able to create an outfit that led me to win a fashion award in my category with students in my major competing for the chance to win.

However, once I graduated from high school with a knowledge of how to sew, drape and manufacture clothing, I didn’t want to be a fashion designer anymore. I wanted to be the observer behind all the chaos and dedication that comes in designing an outfit or putting a show together. I wanted to combine my love of fashion with my love of writing.

Now, with my final year in college ahead of me, I’m looking into internships in fashion publications. My top favorites are Glamour, ELLE magazine, NYLON magazine, Vogue, Teen Vogue, Latina Magazine and Cosmopolitan for Latinas! I’m hoping that CollegeFashionista will help me strengthen my skills in writing about fashion and allow me to be surrounded by others with the same interests as me!

Fashion has always been a part of me and I’m all for confidence when it comes to it!
