STYLE GURU BIO: Carlyn Pounders

Hello, college fashion world! My name is Carlyn Pounders. I am a senior Journalism major at Georgia State University. While I do not want to work in the fashion industry when I graduate, I do love a stylish outfit! I’m excited to be a Fashionista this summer for the first time so that I can capture looks that inspire me and blog about them!

I believe that fashion is universal. I mean, it is one of those things that really grounds us and connects us as human beings because fashion can incorporate elements of time, culture, history and art. Just look at the fashions from the Met Gala a few weeks ago where some notable highlights were Rihanna in Chinese couture made by Guo Pei, Beyonce Knowles in her I Dream of Jeannie-like ponytail and Solange Knowles in her Giles Deacon dress.

I believe a good outfit is the key to confidence. It can tell so much about a person without them saying a word. When you see a well put together look, you can’t ignore it. Something about it catches your eye and you find yourself saying, “That’s a great outfit. She/he looks good.” When someone is really proud of a well put together look, it shows!

Even better, there are so many occasions that a person can try on different looks. Whether they are going to class, a school event, an internship or going out, the possibilities are endless! I love that with fashion you can be whoever you want to be.

I change my style up often. I can look a little punk one day and urban the next. I love pre-loved finds from the thrift stores. I tend to gravitate to the old-school and vintage finds that look like they could have come out of your grandma’s closet. I just love really unique pieces. The floral shirt that I’m wearing caught my eye at the thrift store because it was so flowy and whimsical. I paired it with some navy high-waisted shorts and nude sandals to show off my summer toes.

I’m looking forward to incorporating more fashion trends into my own closet- and in these posts! Summers in Atlanta get very hot and humid. You will most likely see a lot of high-waisted shorts, tank tops and crop tops (I also love to keep cool in a maxi skirt). You can find a lot of stylish people on Georgia State’s campus; some might be simple and some might look like they walked out of the pages of a fashion magazine. I’ll be on the hunt for both and hope to inspire you too with fashion straight from the A.
