STYLE GURU BIO: Brenna Koeneke

Hello, fellow Fashionistas of the world! I’m so excited to be part of the College Fashionista team. I’m a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison studying journalism and strategic communications. Despite being a semester away from graduating, I’m eager to push myself during my time as a Style Guru Intern and further develop my personal style. Meeting some rad people along the way isn’t so bad, either.

Some of my earliest memories involve sitting in the bathroom while my grandma put foundation, eyeshadow and lipstick on my face as well as eagerly spending my hard earned allowance on the sparkliest eyeshadow I could find at my local drugstore. It is this constant drive for self expression that has developed my sense of style.

Through the ups and downs, fashion has been a consistent way for me to be artistic. One day I could be wearing ripped jeans, vans, a concert T-shirt and a choker and the next I could be wearing the frilliest dress and the girliest heels in my closet. That’s the beauty of fashion: there is no right way. In fact, I encourage rule breaking. Being one of 40,000 on campus, it’s easy to get lost in the sea of trends. But what can you do differently than everyone else? How can you add your personal signature to each outfit you create? Being unique and taking chances is the best part of fashion. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I’m a firm believer that money doesn’t equal fashion. I love finding knock-off pieces to create high-end looks for less. One of my favorite pieces for winter is this faux shearling coat from Forever 21, a dupe from many other expensive brands. It’s easy to throw on over a sweater and leggings for a fashionable way to brave the cold. Being from Wisconsin, finding new ways to stay warm AND fashionable is a must. This look also includes a dark lip and layered chokers, some of my favorite winter trends.

I can’t wait to see what lies ahead! Feel free to follow me via social media to keep up with my latest fashion inspiration.
