STYLE GURU BIO: Bianca Velazquez

Hey everyone! My name is Bianca Velazquez and I am a sophomore at Rutgers University-New Brunswick majoring in Journalism and Media Studies. What I love about this field of study is the flexibility and diversity that it allows me, to analyze things from media in the news to fashion in its industry. I am extremely excited to be a part of the CollegeFashionista team as a Style Guru!

Growing up, I was always exposed to fashion: My grandmother on my mother’s side had lived a great deal of her life in Alberona, Italy, working from a young age as a seamstress. While I was growing up, she taught me how to sew by hand, how to utilize a sewing machine in the right way, how to pair fabrics, etc. I would make clothing for my American Girl dolls in my spare time. By doing this I learned a great deal about fashion itself. Not only was my mother a great influence on my eye for fashion, but she was also an advocate for “dressing outside the box.” She always encouraged me not to be afraid to attempt different styles and trends. In this way, I have been able to expand the way I look at fashion and am able to sense and predict up-and-coming trends before the public does.

My style can range from feminine and dressy to edgy and vintage. I love the diversity of my wardrobe because I feel that it shows my mood on that particular day. I love accessories in any outfit I put together, especially layered necklaces and rings. The ability to dress outside of comfort zones is something I truly value within every day life.

Beginning this journey with CollegeFashionista, I am very confident that I will gain hands-on knowledge about the fashion industry, as well as observe the many ways that people view fashion in today’s generation. My advice to anyone would be to define yourself through your clothing. Let your wardrobe voice your personality to others!
