STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: The Kimono Craze

July 17th, 2015 at 2:00am

Today’s awesome style advice is brought to you by a traditional Japanese garment that has been recreated by American culture: kimonos! Traditionally, the kimono was a long, straight dress-like garment that folded over and had long, loose open arms. They resembled the kind of kids’ Japanese costumes you might find around halloween time.

Recently, a recreation of the kimono has become very popular. Unlike the original style, the American version is like a light cardigan. It is generally made out of very flowy fabric such as silk, satin or lightweight polyester, and is supposed to look oversized and flimsy.

This Fashionista looked so adorable sporting a RAD pink and black floral kimono. The sleeves were loose, three-quarter length and, of course, adorable. Underneath, she wore a loose white graphic T-shirt with a floral design on it (hello, double floral!). For bottoms, she wore a pair of loose, light-wash, distressed boyfriend jeans. Last but not least, let’s discuss her accessories. Since the print on the kimono was so busy, this Fashionista went minimal with extras. She wore a little pink flower ring, which actually matched the flowers on her kimono. Coincidence? I think not.

Throwing on a kimono is a great alternative when a cardigan or jacket seems too boring or heavy. Need a fun print? Want something that won’t make you sweat? Want your outfit to grab everyone’s attention? You get the idea.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “There is no better time than summer to rock kimonos. They aren’t too heavy and can dress up other simple pieces in your outfit. Thank you, Japanese culture!”
