STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Taking Risks and Mixing Patterns

September 28th, 2015 at 3:49pm

It is always great to take a little risk. Whether it’d be skydiving or getting an extra shot of expresso in your daily morning coffee, a little risk in our lives doesn’t hurt. For this Fashionista, she took the risk of mixing patterns and absolutely nailed it. Mixing patterns is something no regular person dares to try, but an adventurous Fashionista/o will dive right into it. Are you ready to take on the risk?

When mixing patterns, there are a couple key ideas that every Fashionista/o should consider. A great way to conquer this look is to break up your patterns. Wearing solids or neutrals will help the outfit not look too overwhelming. Another rule of thumb is to not have your patterns compete with each other. Big floral patterns and large plaid is a major no-no. Having a pattern smaller than the other will help balance the outfit and if the prints are the same scale, break it up.

Mixing patterns has dated back long before we could remember. This trend gives off a girly, yet classy look for any occasion and stands out because it’s daring. It screams “risk taker” where ever you go. Now you ask yourself, “So where do I begin?” Check out this Fashionista for some inspiration. She paired her black and white polka-dot pleated skirt with a light pink colored sweater to separate from her floral scarf. The scale of her polka-dot pattern is not too big that it overwhelms the floral pattern on her scarf. Small, subtle accessories like her bold, red belt are a perfect touch to tie the whole outfit together.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “I like to balance out my patterns with a solid color to space it out, but don’t be afraid to be bold with it. Our limit is only as big as our creativity.”
