STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Pink Please

April 4th, 2016 at 2:10am

There are many things the color black is great for, but that’s not the point of this article; the point is how to use other colors by using black strategically. This brings us to this Fashionista. It’s not hard to see at first glance the amount of dark values which dominant this outfit, however, we wouldn’t notice what’s going down on her feet without the contrasting hues.

Current trends all point towards the use of muted, pastel colors, like the perfectly salmon pink Raf Simons’s just chilling on the bottom of this Fashionista’s feet. Pay attention to the amount of dark values that dominate your look in order to play with how dramatic you want it to be. For example, had this outfit been almost completely black, it would’ve made this Fashionista’s pastel salmon shoes look extremely bright and attention grabbing. In this particular case, the casual floral jacket opens up to a neutral gray that allows some breathing room for the colors in this outfit to rest on. Also, by keeping her colors matched with the salmon shoes and pinkish floral pattern, this outfit begins to feel extremely balanced, yet reserved.

Lastly, take a look at how the sleeves on this outfit are rolled up. If you want to show off some jewels on the wrist, allow some room for them to breathe so that your accessories don’t feel crowded. By leaving a little bit of skin for her to don a retro gold Casio, this Fashionista is saying, “look at my wrist,” a bit more persuasively than just slapping on a diamond studded bezel.

Check out pastel T-shirts like this with a luxurious sheen that also go great with wrist accessories because of their material and construction. Which brings me to my final thought, look very closely at the color coordination going on here and you see that gold is maintained on the wrist, necklace and nose piercing. Gold is a rather warm color that goes nicely with a cooler salmon pink (think of rose gold). Even the smallest occasions of color and jewelry consistency help to keep in order any outfit; especially one that is marked by three muted tones of black, gray and pink.
