STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Light Layers

Summer, go home you’re done (and for goodness sakes, please take those hideous Jack Rogers sandals with you). The PSL season is in full effect, and the knee jerk go-to trend is layering, of course. Sure it’s functional, but this year why not think outside the fall fashion box? Instead of bulking up with coats and thick sweaters, learn to layer thinner tops in a way that creates an edgy sleek silhouette.

Switch out your leather jacket for a black leather vest. This Fashionista scores extra points for rocking one with angled cuts at the hips—so B.A. I know you’re probably hesitant about swapping a warm leather jacket for a skimpy vest, but don’t fret. We’ve still got two layers to go!

To snag this look you’re going to want to rock not one, but two tops. The first will be a thin, shear-like black top. Go for one with length so the flared bottom can be seen beneath the other layers. Next, throw on a lightweight printed button-down. Aim to find a print that has black in it (cohesiveness is important!).

Finalize the look with black skinnies and a chunky black boot. Right now, we’re focusing on serving an edgy all-black everything sort of vibe, so don’t throw it off with bright jewelry. Instead go for metallic. This Fashionista’s chunky gold chains and diamond studs are the perfect finish!

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “For me, layering is all about negative space. I really enjoy creating new and fun ways for lower layers to be seen—that’s why I fell in love with the slits in this vest!”
