STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Geek Is Chic

For those of you who read my Style Guru Bio, you all know just how much I love fall fashion, especially sweaters. In fact, my idea of the perfect outfit contains a beautiful, over-sized, pullover sweater. Thankfully, that style of sweater is really fashionable right now, especially around DePaul University’s campus. However, instead of being like me and only wearing neutrals, more and more students are wearing colorful, patterned sweaters. These sweaters almost remind me of the ones you would see the geeky kids wearing in the 1980s and 1990s TV shows and movies, i.e. the weird stepdad in The Santa Clause. Therefore, I’m finding that it’s now cool to look like the nerdy kid at school.

This Fashionista is rocking the perfect example of this kind of sweater. The turquoise color makes it scream 1980s, and that combined with the slanted lines and dots of the pattern definitely qualifies this as a geek chic sweater. My favorite part of this look is how effortlessly she made it an athleisure look with the leggings. The over-sized fit of the sweater makes it look perfect with long ankle leggings, as shown. I also really like that she chose sneakers instead of boots or anything higher because the pattern is already pretty powerful in itself. Any bigger shoe would then be competing for attention with her sweater.

As the weather starts to get cooler, I definitely foresee these patterned sweaters being all over campus, as well as the city of Chicago. From vintage thrift stores on the corner to bigger retailers like Urban Outfitters, these sweaters seem to be everywhere. I love that people are embracing the trend and really looking for ways to spice up their traditional fall wardrobes. Although I may still be sticking to my beloved neutrals, I applaud anyone who is brave enough to take the step out of their comfort zones to embrace being chic and geeky. Take risks with your geeky sweaters. The crazier, the better!
