STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Belts Make Beautiful Scarves?

July 14th, 2016 at 2:00am

On my college campus I frequently see a guy who dresses in khaki jeans and a green shirt and sports the exact hair cut of Shaggy from Scooby Doo. His refurbished look to the classic character really sparked my interest in how celebrities and popular figures have the monumental ability to influence fashion. Personally, I do not think that Shaggy was exactly the fashion icon of the famous television series; however, I always admired Daphne’s chic purple dress and headband, green neck scarf, and orange hair combination. She definitely seemed like the most fashionably aware character, and I have always been very drawn to characters with a common interest.

As I strolled down the Virginia Beach boardwalk, looking out carefully for a girl who is not afraid to be fearless and fun with her style in the summer despite being tempted to never wear anything but a bikini because of the easy beach access, I had spotted another missing member of the Mystery Gang—Daphne. Wow. I thought. The Mystery Gang has officially given up crime solving and gone their separate ways. Whereas I knew exactly where Shaggy was going given he was in the middle of the VCU campus, I had absolutely no idea where this Daphne-inspired Fashionista was headed—my best guess was she was lost because she looked like she should be strutting down a runway in a minute.

Ladies and gentlemen…I introduce you to a gorgeous Fashionista a.k.a Daphne Blake! It turns out that she is not actually a mystery solving prodigy, but what is true is that fashion is no mystery to her. She had paired some patterned lavender shorts from TJ Maxx with a matching lavender crop top from Tobi. She also wore strappy Calvin Klein heels that add a beautiful pop of color to the originally monochromatic outfit and a two-toned necklace from Charming Charlie’s underneath what appeared to be a ’50s inspired scarf. Her outfit was bold and daring as it combined two unlikely colors together and mixed busy shorts with a solid, yet far from simple, crop top and busy heels. Some might say there was a lot going on, but I think this Fashionista got the look just right.

I asked her if she had the chance to share any advice for aspiring Fashionistas this summer, what would she say to them. She laughed and gave me this response: “Do you see the scarf I am wearing around my neck? It is actually the belt to these shorts, but shhh! Don’t tell anyone!” Sorry, but that is too good!

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? Your clothes can be versatile, so do not be afraid to experiment with a soft belt as a scarf or a long skirt as a maxi dress or even a very long necklace as a flashy belt! How you wear and accessorize a piece represents your true style and not just that of the brand from which the piece is made.
