STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: A Double Dose of Denim

I think it’s safe to say that denim will never die. Trends of different types of denim and how to wear it will fade in and out, but denim itself is here to stay ladies and gents.

With that said, denim is a huge trend being featured on the runway right now for many designers’ spring 2016 Collections including, Stella McCartney, Marc Jacobs, Off White, Chanel and Alexander Wang. They are featuring it as a retro ’90s trend with the slouchy, wide leg and patchwork elements. The high fashion world is all about the monochromatic look right now as well, in bold color and denim. This can be a very difficult look to pull off; you need the right textures, color shades, details and accessories to make it look chic, and not as if you accidentally threw a red sock in the washer with all of your white clothes.

I was truly inspired by this Fashionisto’s monochromatic denim look. He has a very keen eye when it comes to denim, as he has become a denim expert through his work experience at American Eagle Outfitters. He chose to go with the retro, destroyed patchwork jeans in a medium to faded wash, and paired it with a classic light wash jean jacket. The contrast in washes, when wearing denim on denim, is extremely important, so that it doesn’t take you back too deep into the ’90s. Rather, it keeps the outfit looking modern and chic (Sorry, Britney and Justin. We love you, but your dynamic denim duo was just too iconic to ever resurrect from the 2001 VMAs). To further pull in the monochromatic element with the denim, he wore a baby blue T-shirt underneath his jacket.

Being careful not to take away from the monochromatic denim feel, he stuck with a consistent shade of brown for all of his accessories (boots, belt and sunglasses). It is also key, when going for the monochromatic look, to bring in one additional basic color to break up the focal color a little bit. Lastly, to accommodate for the transitioning weather from winter into spring, he chose to wear a pair of transitional boots by Polo Ralph Lauren, and a pair of aviator shades for the emerging sun.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Since denim is timeless, I suggest investing in a quality staple piece like a classic denim jacket, or pair of designer jeans. It’s so versatile that you’ll definitely get your wear out of it, and the awesome part about denim is that it only looks better with age!”
