Simple Steps to Start a Blog

Just like changing fashion trends, blogging is in! With the rise of Instagram and online promotion and shopping, blogging has become a career of its own, taking the internet and social media by storm. No matter what you’re interested in—politics, fashion, food, business—blogging is the perfect way to organize creative and professional thoughts and show off your skills to the world!

Where to start

First, decide what you’re interested in! Think about what you love and what you’re good at and make a list. A site that is too eclectic will lose a reader’s attention. Hone in on your taste and your goal for your blog. Are you selling a product? Add links, descriptions, and photos! Promoting an event? Add information, set the scene, link the tickets! If you’re running a tech blog, include links for accessories that show off your personal style. If makeup is your thing, include products and methods, or show off your new favorite lipstick!

If you’re a food blogger, share your favorite recipes, restaurants, or kitchen appliances.  It’s important to be specific about what your area of expertise is, but also general enough that readers can find more than one thing that they’re interested in.

Pick your layout

There are multiple resources that will help you in creating a professional blog that you can use as a tool in whatever business you choose:

WordPress

Wix

Flipboard

Squarespace

These are all user-friendly sites with start-up layouts at free or low costs. Choose what works best for you.

Design

Design your blog so it’s personal to you. Include photos of yourself, pick your favorite colors, include things you love! If you set a brand for yourself, your viewers will be able to grasp your image as soon as they log on! Make sure your layout and site are appealing to the eye. If your site is too cluttered, navigation may be frustrating to your audience.

Be consistent

You don’t have to post every day, but make sure your readers have new things to see when they log on. If your ideas are running low, include a product of the day, or share any deals you found that week. If your expertise is home decor, show off your newest throw pillow steals in your dorm room!

Inactive blogs are boring blogs, and ultimately unsuccessful. Give your site life!

Promote!

Lastly, the final step is promoting yourself! Share your blog with friends, family, and colleagues. Put in on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest and ask your followers to share it. Add it to your resume, but make sure it’s material you want future and possible employers to see you represent. Get your image, word, product, or brand out there for the world to see and enjoy! For once, it really is all about you!
