BEAUTY BAR: Matte About Lipstick

Ever since I was a little girl, I marveled at the magic of makeup and how it transformed women into more beautiful versions of themselves. I was especially fascinated by lipstick and even today, at 21, I am still fascinated by the perfect execution of a classic red lip.  The moment I put on my favorite shade of lipstick, I immediately feel prettier and a whole lot more confident. To quote the great Elizabeth Taylor: “Pour yourself a drink, put on some lipstick, and pull yourself together.”

The newest, and in my opinion, hottest trend in lipstick is liquid matte. Matte lipstick is different than a traditional shiny or crème sheen lipstick; it contains more pigment, therefore giving the lipstick a deeper and more vivid color. The beauty of liquid matte lipstick is just what it sounds like: it’s liquid! Liquid lipstick makes application so much easier, allowing for perfect lips every time. Any excuse not to use lip liner is a win in my book.

The matte lipstick trend has been spotted on some of the hottest celebrities including Kylie Jenner and Taylor Swift and can even be found on the perfectly manicured green at the University of Delaware campus. Walking back to my apartment after a torturous day of classes I spotted this Fashionista walking into a coffee shop. Before she ruined her perfectly executed matte lips with a sip of her PSL, I stopped her for a quick photoshoot. My matte lipstick muse is wearing Kat Von D’s Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Underage Red. Stopping this Fashionista proved to be a success because she just so happened to be a makeup enthusiast (I mean who else would successfully rock a matte lip to classes). She suggested several other liquid matte lipsticks that will send you running to your local beauty counter: Anastasia Liquid Lipstick and Lancome ‘L’Absolu Rouge Velours’ Liquid Matte Lipstick. With gorgeous, rich shades perfect for fall, I’d be surprised if you haven’t already clicked on the link to purchase.

What’s on the BEAUTY BAR: To recreate this beauty trend at home, it is very important that you start with soft and smooth lips! Get in the habit of always putting on lip balm before applying any type of lipstick, even liquid lipstick and especially matte lipstick; matte lipstick contains almost no moisture and will show cracks if your lips are not properly hydrated. Once your lips are smooth and ready to be painted, grab your liquid matte lipstick and apply. When applying, make sure to do several coats; a thicker coat will allow for a deeper shade and a smoother look on the lips. When going for a statement lip, which a matte lip is, simplify the rest of your makeup with soft, neutral shades on your lids and a little face powder to eliminate shine.
