ALL IN THE DETAILS: The Mismatch Method

June 2nd, 2015 at 2:00am

In this day and age, mismatched separates and accessories are extremely underrated. Strictly focusing on which belt best matches your shoes every day can often lead to a monotonous wardrobe. By cramming all of the same colors, textures and patterns into one outfit you are not allowing your creative side to bloom. Knowing how to rock a slightly unbalanced look is considered a talent in today’s fashion world. It may take a little getting used to, but with a few baby steps, you’ll be glad you escaped from your comfort zone.

This Fashionista was spotted roaming the streets near campus in her casual, afternoon attire. By pairing a subtle, pink top with plain, black bottoms, she was able to get inventive with her shoes and accessories. Her dark blue sneakers complement the pink top and give a fun pop of color to the look. The leather texture of this Fashionista’s cross-body bag adds another element to her look, as does the floral pattern of her watch. She even breaks the old school tradition by mixing silver and gold jewelry. I give serious kudos to this Fashionista for not being afraid to mix things up and allowing her personality to shine through her wardrobe.

How To:  Mix different colors, but keep colors within the same color family. For example, mix muted colors with other muted colors. Next, play with layers. Start with one pattern and slowly keep layering on a different pattern each day until you get a feel for mixing patterns. For example, if you’re wearing a leopard print top, try adding a thick striped cardigan over it. You’re bound to be an expert if you practice this technique. Also, don’t be afraid to mix textures. Try pairing a faux fur vest with a leather jacket. Finally, scratch the idea of matching accessories. Your purse does not have to match your necklace, I promise.
