ALL IN THE DETAILS: Subtlety is the Best Policy

Winter fashion, personally, is the most difficult to accomplish. Drastic changes in temperature makes it difficult to keep up-to-date with fashion trends while still having enough layers to stay warm. Layers is how my fellow friend and Fashionista, Bethany Durst, kept warm. Bethany paired a blue and white plaid shirt with her hot pink Vineyard Vines pullover sweatshirt. When the collar and bottom hem of the plaid shirt peak out from under the main layer, it pulls the look together for a more trendy look. She also chose knee-high boots, a good choice that helps keep her legs warmer instead of just the single layer of jeans.

Although the outfit is functional for the colder climates, the accessories are the cherry on top. The key to accessories when you have a simple outfit is subtlety. One thing Bethany also did well is coordination with her accessories. Her baseball cap, sunglasses and her boots are all black, which complements her gold jewelry and the framework of her sunglasses nicely. The plain baseball cap gives the look a sporty vibe. As a college student, it proves functional as well; with second-day hair, a bad hair day or if you’re just running late, throwing on the baseball cap can transform your look with little to no effort. To go along with the effortless look, Bethany picked out a simple pair of gold-rimmed aviators. An oversized pair of sunglasses with any look makes it feel high fashion, and it’s great for people watching on campus! Finally, we have the oldest trick in the book: jewelry. Stud earrings keep the look simple and classy. However, to add an edge to the look, Bethany chose a black choker. Any other chain necklace would hang too low and get lost in her sweatshirt. A choker, however, remains high up on the neck to add the slightest and most subtle edgy quality to the overall look.

Don’t forget to layer up this winter, and certainly don’t leave your accessories at home because they can truly transform your outfit.
