ALL IN THE DETAILS: Style Your Socks

Here at the University of Notre Dame it’s not always winter. Only 90 percent of the time. For the 10 percent of the time that it isn’t, my fellow students and I consider braving the 50 degree temperatures by baring a smidge more skin than usual. I usually consider this to be one of a few opportunities to transition my spring and summer pieces into fall, as did this Fashionista. When the winter throws a little Indian summer your way, ponder the possibility of showing a little skin with some over the knee socks.

When I saw this Fashionista strutting around campus in her stylish socks, I first admired her fearlessness for forgoing the usual jeans and a T-shirt combination. Instead, she paired her burgundy T-shirt with a black skirt and black over the knee socks. She added several unique touches including iridescent Dr. Martens, a turquoise Buddha head necklace and colorful bracelets. By pulling her hair back from her face, she showcased turquoise and tortoise shell glasses that are as sassy as her personality.

How To: Rock the over the knee socks like this Fashionista by pairing them with a skater skirt and casual T-shirt. An alternative to this would be layering the socks over some black tights and pairing them with a graphic T-shirt, or a loose dress instead. Black or a solid color tend to be the most versatile of sock options, but if you’re looking to spruce up an otherwise monochrome outfit, go for a pattern. If it’s a particularly warm day, trade the boots for flats or oxfords!
