ALL IN THE DETAILS: Maxi-mum Impact

It turns out that the term “maxi” doesn’t just apply to dresses and skirts in the fashion world anymore. Maxis have expanded past just spring and summertime and are making their debut for fall and winter wear as well—in cardigan form that is. Recently I’ve been seeing tons of maxi cardigans in stores, and I have to say that I’m really loving this trend. The extra length adds a bit of a twist to your typical cardigan, while still remaining comfortable and cozy for cold weather. Plus, with several styles and patterns available, there are plenty of ways to work a maxi cardigan into your wardrobe.

This Fashionista is a great example of how a longer cardigan can make a super simple outfit a bit more interesting. She starts her look with a solid turtleneck top, a versatile piece that’s perfect for layering. Turtlenecks are a great staple piece that have made a comeback this past season, and can even be seen featured in several collections at this year’s New York Fashion Week. Over her turtleneck, this Fashionista wears a blanket-like plaid cardigan with fringe that has a very flowy silhouette. She pairs her cardigan with a plain pair of jeans, and finishes the look with some lace-up boots that have a boyish feel.

As you can tell, a seemingly simple outfit can be made a bit more memorable when you add some extra length to your cardigan or sweater. From there, it’s also great to experiment with mixing textures and fabrics, to create a more interesting look.

How To: Start with a solid turtleneck and layer it with a patterned, floor-length cardigan. Add your favorite pair of jeans and boots, and that’s all there is to it! To mix things up a little, play with your proportions by choosing a chunkier knit, a pair of high-waisted jeans or even some heeled booties.
