ALL IN THE DETAILS: Getting Caught In The Wind

Sometimes it’s fun to walk down the street and feel the breeze against your face. The wind picks up and tosses your hair back for you. You may not be a supermodel, but for that moment, no one can tell you otherwise. Some types of clothing make it easier to have the feeling of a wind machine with you. One of which is a style I’ve been happily surprised to notice. Long jackets alone are not groundbreaking, but the way they’ve been styled lately has become a small fascination of mine.

The contrast of the short hemline under the jacket’s longer hem is the main reason why this style works so well. With shorts, a little romper or a skirt, a long cardigan creates some depth by playing with length. The platform sandals from Forever 21 are a throwback to the ‘90s and add height to the already leggy look. These sunglasses also give the look a relaxed feeling, well suited with the oversized cardigan. Depending on the style of jacket you choose, the texture, color, pattern and fabric weight can lead to a totally different take on the trend. It can go boho, grunge or even preppy with a ladylike skirt.

You can either choose to downplay the jacket or you can make it the whole focal point. A cozy knit or crocheted cardigan is a relaxed, casual piece good for focusing on the clothing under it. A sheer floral print or an intricate design with special details like fringe will make a statement for the daytime. This would do better with neutrals or solid colors underneath to prevent it from looking too busy.

How To: On a day you’re feeling a little dramatic, wear your long jacket with some exposed leg and platform sandals. Then put on some shades and wait for the next breeze.
