ALL IN THE DETAILS: Fur Sure

Ever since the beginning of humankind (I’m talking caveman times), fur has been utilized to protect the body from the harmful conditions of the environment. Further along the fashion timeline in Europe, luxury furs went beyond the warmth factor with being associated with social stratification. Bringing us to the year 2015, wearing fashion furs is still used as a social status of glamour. But, more frequently, we are seeing faux fur which still provides that ultra-elegant look but with an animal-friendly alternative.

When it comes to faux fur, I have a newfound respect, and full credit is due to my enrollment in a textiles class this spring semester. It’s so unbelievable how the technological innovation of man-made fabric, such as the knitted fabric of a pile jersey knit, can make something so realistic looking and feeling like fur, without having to harm the innocent creatures of this beautiful universe. Faux fur can also be seen in vests, coats, mittens and hats.

This Fashionista “fur sure” knows how to look fabulous in this looped faux fur scarf. She kept the rest of her ensemble all black and edgy with her black leather jacket, dress, tights and combat boots. She complemented the gray tones in her fur scarf by layering under her combats a pair of gray white-trimmed wool socks. Along with her fur scarf, she kept her accessories simple, yet hip, with her tortoiseshell framed glasses, nose ring and burlap backpack.

How To: Just got a fierce new faux fur scarf and you’re ready to show the world (a.k.a. your campus)? Play the matching game of wearing the same color throughout, such as black, and let the faux fur do the magic with its automatic glam factor.
