ALL IN THE DETAILS: I'm Not Your Daddy, I'm Your Grandpa!

In the winter, we throw on Cosby sweaters and “grandpa cardigans.” When it starts to heat up, though, how can one transition his or her more mature look into summer? My featured Fashionista for this week nails the old man look perfectly by mixing pieces from multiple categories. From the thrift store to the women’s section to grandma’s closet, she covers all the bases and executes the look with precision.

My favorite detail of the Fashionista’s outfit is her button-down. The tiny symbols splattered all over the shirt are actually little bicycles. If you like snazzy button-downs, don’t be afraid to venture into the men’s section or into the little boys’ if you’re more on the petite side like this Fashionista. I love how the print gives the shirt a playful vibe without looking too childish. For instance, this button-down from J.Crew has a sailboat print that’s right on time for the summer. If you find yourself swimming in the bagginess of male sleeves, cuff them a few times to create a more slim fit. Her olive green pants tie the look together. I am a HUGE fan of olive colored bottoms (I own at least eight pairs). I like to wear them as an alternative to the everyday skinny jean. They are equally as versatile and can be worn with nearly anything. These SuperDry pants would be an awesome addition to any closet.

As for the accessories, our Fashionista actually made her own earrings from polymer clay, finishing them off with gold-flaked paint. She also revealed that her gold-rimmed glasses don’t actually help her see; they are fashion frames with plastic lenses that she snagged on sale for just 10 dollars! She calls them her “grandpa” glasses and commented that, “They give anything I wear that finishing touch.” The gold detailing of her earrings, glasses and even her nose ring make the accessories of the outfit cohesive. Another mature piece that this Fashionista incorporated into her look were her sandals, which she said were passed down to her from her grandmother. As cute as they are, I would’ve never known!

How To: If you’d like to take your look to the next level, but your vision isn’t impaired, try a pair of faux glasses. Many optics shops like bleudame.com offer hundreds of non-prescription options, such as this pair that turns into sunglasses when you go outdoors!
