STYLE GURU STYLE: Redefining The Undefined

The recent spring 2015 ready-to-wear runway show by 3.1 Phillip Lim marked the company’s tenth anniversary. This show particularly stood out to me due to the practicality of the wear now clothing the brand put forth on the catwalk. The ensembles did not necessarily have a defined theme throughout the show. Instead, the theme could be labeled as “undefined.” Out of the 46 looks, look 26 caught my eye for its contrast between black and white and long and short.

This look left me with my interpretation of winter versus spring. As seen, the short white dress and the nude suede heeled booties in the runway, which is paired with a long overcoat, is a mix between the two seasons, or shall I say a transition between the two. I chose to wear a white cotton shirtdress with suede beige booties. This outfit alone can be worn throughout the spring and into the summer, but when further developed, it can be worn through the transition from winter. I paired the dress and shoes with a long wool coat. The two, as in the cotton dress and the wool coat, seem like an unlikely duo, but thanks to the 3.1 Phillip Lim look and the recent show as a whole, I was given the inspiration needed to experiment with the contrast of materials and seasons. In making the look my own, I added a red carryall pouch that I repurposed as a clutch. This little bag has proved very versatile, as I have used it both as a bag inside of a bigger bag and as a clutch on its own.

This spring ready-to-wear show, although undefined, gave me a new definition of transition and just how multifaceted transition wear can be. This concept of mixing and matching fabrics and seasons is one that I will continue to experiment with in the winter, spring, summer and fall.

Get My Look: 1. An effortless cotton shirtdress. 2. The perfect suede booties. 3. A long wool coat.
