STYLE GURU STYLE: The Working Fashionista

One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced while working in a corporate environment is the limitations of business attire. I always say that when it comes to the business world you first have to dress the part to embody the part, then embody the part to obtain the part. But as much as I love a good pantsuit, a crisp clean button down, and a pair of court shoes, it becomes quite the bore over an extensive period of time. The cotton-blend, black and navy blue can really cramp your style and I honestly just need to switch it up every once in a while—even if that means breaking away from the mundane dress codes of the financial world. The trick is making sure you aren’t breaking any rules when you strut across the floor during those nine to five meetings. After all, they are rules and no one wants to jeopardize a position over textures, colors, and cuts. Nevertheless, anyone with a penchant for style knows that every area of life is worth dressing up for, even when it comes to a career.

This outfit is one of my favorites for work because it’s safe and satisfies the category of business casual, but it also includes a few of the little trends that I absolutely adore. This faux leather pencil skirt is modest in length and standard in color, but outstanding in fit and form. My tie-neck blouse is a tender little number with ruffles, plus it’s the ideal shade of pink for a conservative role. As I mentioned before, I love court shoes, so these patent black heels are a classic; they’re sleek, comfortable and striking enough to make any aspiring fashionista feel like a powerhouse all on their own. To finish off my look, I draped my shoulders in a traditionally long camel coat and a black tote bag to store my laptop, notes, coffee, and (of course) lipstick!
