STYLE GURU BIO: Maria Heilig

Hey fellow Fashionistas/os! I’m Maria Heilig and this is my first semester as a CollegeFashionista Style Guru! I’m extremely excited to go through this journey with you all, to learn about your personal style and to continue developing my own. I’m starting my junior year at Florida State University (GO NOLES!), where I study retail merchandising and product development with a minor in business. As most college students, I came into college unsure of what I wanted to study. My mom told me to “Follow your heart and study what you’re passionate about, and the rest will follow.” To this day, she is the person who gave me the confidence to study what I love: fashion. Random things about me you should know: I like to sing (I’ll never do it for you in public), I’m in a co-ed business fraternity on FSU’s campus and I am in love with my dogs.

If I had to describe my personal style, I would say it’s mostly bohemian-chic. Take a look into my closet and you’ll see black and a lot of earth tones. My favorite daily go-to pieces are a pair of distressed jeans, a loose top and a pair of gladiator sandals. When it’s the weekend and it’s finally time for a night out, I reach for a backless top. The outfit pictured is my definition of a night-ready look. The top is the focus: a little revealing and playful, while the jeans, choker and booties complement and complete the look. I always go out with a clutch, big enough to hold your wallet and keys but small enough to lug around all night. This faux-snake skin clutch is my absolute favorite, and it adds texture and color to the mix. If you’re drawn to simple styles and colors like I am, a bold purse can really balance out your outfit.

As fall approaches, some of the pieces I’m excited to break out of my closet are a classic trench coat, over-the-knee boots and chunky sweaters. It’s always fun to wear the new trends, but don’t be afraid to express your personal style. I am so grateful for this opportunity, and excited for the upcoming semester! Until next time!
