This year was nothing but innovative and bold for Elie Tahari. While the designer celebrated his fortieth year as a label, Elie Tahari set out to create both urban and wearable clothing, which I find to be very successful. This Elie Tahari fall 2014 ready-to-wear collection is based on the theme “lightning through darkness,” and these creations represent that vibrant street style.

Look 23 from the collection really caught my eye. This could be played on in so many ways so that Fashionistas could easily incorporate it into their fall and winter wardrobes. When recreating outfits that you see on the runway it doesn’t have to be an exact match, and I honestly prefer that. You can show off your individuality by tailoring the look to your personal style.

I explored the entire collection before choosing look 23 because I wanted to make a cute everyday outfit that could also be worn for an occasion. I also didn’t want to run to the nearest mall and buy new clothes. Luckily, in my closet I found a GUESS faux leather moto jacket with a hood. The model wears a furry hat on her head so I improvised with my hood. Instead of a two-toned turtleneck sweater, I chose to wear a gray peplum long sleeve sweater. The peplum cut gave the outfit a more feminine, girly vibe.

Instead of Elie Tahari’s fitted black pants, I paired the outfit with black shiny leggings. The leggings are still as form fitting as the pants on the model, but the material is perfect for a lighter feel. To complete this look, I wore a pair of black booties. Booties are perfect for days when you don’t want to wear a pair of tall boots. Because I was on the way to go shopping, I carried a black pocketbook to hold all my belongings.

This fall 2014 ready-to-wear collection taught me that you can be inspired by looks that you see on the runway and not have to spend the runway price. It also showed me that you can change up a direction of an outfit by altering one piece.

Get My Look: 1. A gray long sleeve peplum sweater. 2. A pair of black leggings. 3. A pair of black booties.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Beloved Boyfriend Jeans

Move over skinny jeans, you have some stylish competition for fall. Boyfriend jeans have always been around, but they’re making quite the statement this season. Styling this type of denim can easily transform your look, especially if you’re a lover of a laid back style.

I love how this Fashionista created a casual outfit that’s perfect for this time of year. Her cream, cable knit cardigan is the perfect way to keep warm while walking around campus. Having a neutral base in an outfit makes it easy to pair all different colors and patterns. She used this neutral color to her advantage by adding a floral patterned top. This outfit highlights her cozy, chic style. She ties the look together by adding a pair of boyfriend jeans, oxford-inspired shoes and a wrist filled with leather bracelets.

What I love about boyfriend jeans is that they are perfect for the Fashionistas/os who love versatile pieces. They are a staple in your wardrobe whether you decide to dress your look up or down. This Fashionista chose a casual look buy incorporating informal clothing pieces, however if you’re looking to dress up your boyfriend jeans, you can easily transform your look with some additional items. For example, if you’re looking to wear your boyfriend jeans out at night, add a pair of heels with ankle straps for an upgraded look. Then, simply swap out your cardigan for a bold blazer and you’ll have a stylish night out.

However you decide to wear your boyfriend jeans, make sure you take advantage of this trend while you can. Versatility never goes out of style and neither will this denim.

What’s your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK?: “Feeling comfortable is important regardless of your preferred style.”

WHAT TO WEAR: Parent’s Weekend

Parent’s weekend can sometimes be a bigger challenge than you would expect, but this Fashionista can offer a lot of advice! I am sure most of us would agree that what we wear out with our friends is very different than what we would wear out with our parents. Many people feel the need to dress casually when their parents are in town, but this should not be the case. When planning for parents weekend keep in mind that you will most likely be walking around campus a lot, the weather is getting cold, and you will be wearing the same outfit all day and often times into the night.

This Fashionista is wearing the perfect outfit for a day or night out with her parents. Her ensemble consists of a neutral long sleeve sweater dress with a built in slip underneath. The fur vest is a must have for nighttime wear, but not necessary for day time. The extra layers in the dress allow more comfort and warmth. She chose to wear boots in order to keep warm and mobile around campus. Finally, she kept her jewelry simple by adding a gold bracelet with minimal detail. The overall key to parent’s weekend is looking super cute, but not going over the top.

One Simple Change: This outfit is very easy to transition into any event. My advice is to lose the fur, add legwarmers and rock this look for class!

The cold is beginning to sweep the busy streets of downtown Chicago, but not even our bad weather can stop the Fashionistas of this city. Past trends are undeniably making a comeback, and what better way to conquer these chilly days than with a heavy structured cape?

So why are capes so great this fall? Not only do they keep you warm, but they could also serve as the perfect accessory to throw on top of an outfit, especially when breaking up a monochromatic look. They come in so many different styles and cuts, allowing every Fashionista/o to find one that suits his/her style.

This Fashionista’s cape caught my eye immediately. With its subtle pattern and plaid detailing, this cape is the perfect way to amp up her outfit while staying cozy and warm. Capes can also be extremely versatile and go with any outfit such as pants, dresses or like this fashionista, a skirt and top. Once again, a style that is comfortable, stylish and reflects who you are is what makes a true Fashionista!

This Fashionista perfectly finishes accessorizing her outfit by adding a little arm candy, a statement bag to compliment the detailing in her cape, a fall hat to match and suede thigh high boots to keep her legs fashionably warm.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? Find a cape that really speaks who you are! When it comes to the cold weather, it can be hard to express your personal style. Avoid this fashion rut and find your perfect cape couture.

STYLE GURU STYLE: Ron Burgundy Pride

Halloween costumes are planned. Bonfires are held. The temperature begins to slowly decline, and soon enough you turn around and all the leaves have taken shades of red, orange and yellow. Often times, fall comes so fast, we are left thinking, “boy, that escalated quickly.” When fall comes upon us, we are left to quickly change from shorts and tank tops to leggings, riding boots and warm knit sweaters. Personally, fall is one of my favorite seasons to dress for because it allows me freedom to mix and match. Layering becomes a form of art, while playing with colors, tones and patterns becomes the tools to create a true fashion masterpiece. Fall is known for earthy tones from forest greens to tans to browns. During the summer, one of my favorite colors to wear is red, but often true red comes off as a little to bright for the fall weather. This is when I turn to burgundy.

This past March, Elie Saab debuted her fall 2014 ready-to-wear collection. The twelve pieces in the collection centered on burgundy. It included dresses, jackets, lace tops and more. Look Five of her collection really caught my eye. The look was a burgundy jumpsuit with a belt that had a gold accent. She finished the look with burgundy heels. Yes, I know, this sounds like way too much burgundy for one person to pull off at once, but the simplicity of the design made it seem effortlessly beautiful.

With burgundy on my mind, I wanted to experiment with mixing the color with other tones for fall. I began with burgundy leggings from Forever 21 that I thought Saab would be a fan of. I then reached for green, but not the bright green that is common over the summer. I chose more of an olive or forest green. I selected a neutral sweater to add another layer to my look. I wanted a gold accent similar to that in Look 5 of Saab’s collection so I grabbed a long gold necklace with feathers dangling from it. I put on some brown combat boots to finish off my look.

Get My Look: 1. Earth tone leggings, in either forest green, brown or burgundy. 2. A simple, thin top in a different fall shade. 3. A neutral sweater.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: How to Stay Cozy in the Cutest Way Possible

It’s that time of the year again. The leaves change colors and fall to the ground, the air becomes crisp enough that you can see your breath and warm cups of coffee or tea become accessories rather than drinks. Some people refer to this nexus between fall and winter as sweater weather or cuddle weather. I’d like to add another title – layering weather.

This is the best time of the year to experiment with layers. Not only do layers keep you warm on chilly days, but they also add great accents to outfits. Layers enable us to incorporate more colors, patterns, movement and fabrics into what we wear. This Fashionista’s adorable outfit shows just how effective layering can be.

This Fashionista sported a beautiful oversized forest green wool knit sweater over a blue, green and pink cotton floral miniskirt. She wore black opaque tights underneath her skirt and layered on a pair of charcoal gray wool socks on top of them. On top of her socks, she wore brown leather lace-up booties. Lastly, a final layer that she added onto her outfit was her stunning blue and orange patterned scarf. The scarf was also tied to perfection.

Focusing on the bottom half of her outfit, this Fashionista did a wonderful job layering her grey socks underneath her booties and over her tights. By doing so, she created more levels, adding another point of interest. She achieved the same effect with her scarf as well. In addition, the contrast of patterns between her scarf and skirt created a gorgeous blend of colors that complemented each other and did not look overwhelming.

If you like this Fashionista’s look, start playing with layers too! It’s a great way to stay warm and comfortable on top of looking stylish.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Play with the same color palette, since all of the colors go well together. Also, get a pair of wool socks. They are fantastic.”

Max Mara’s pre-fall 2014 show creates an equilibrium with pieces that are simple, yet chic and feminine, yet masculine. With such good balance, the components are extremely versatile as well as inspiring to implement the look into our day-to-day lives. Although the color scheme and the pieces of this line create powerful ensembles, individually, the pieces are inspiring to be worn alone as the focal point. As a college student with my campus as my runway, a single one of the pieces goes a long way in inspiring a look for class. Consequently, I was thrilled to see Max Mara incorporate the look and wear of a poncho jacket in their collection. A classic piece that has made its debut in different styles throughout fashion history, the poncho is worn with high-waisted black shorts, a chic hat, tights and loafers in Max Mara’s line, demonstrating how a seemingly elegant piece of clothing can be worn with more structured, masculine pieces.

I chose to extract inspiration from this overall look of the collection to create an outfit that can be worn on a college campus. I paired my fleece poncho with a chambray shirt from J.Crew and lace shorts. The femininity of the lace shorts balances out the slight masculinity of the chambray shirt. I chose to cinch my waist to fabricate more of a feminine look by wearing my favorite, adorned Steve Madden belt over my poncho. The adorned belt also complements the chic sophistication of the poncho. Wearing black knee-high socks scrunched down under my nude booties enhances the neutrality of my outfit and displays a simple color scheme as demonstrated in Max Mara’s collection. The Max Mara poncho jacket encouraged me to wear my poncho as the focal point of my outfit, while the slight balance between the masculine and feminine pieces inspired me to create the rest of my outfit. To make this look unique, I chose pieces of different textures such as the combination of denim, lace and cotton that aided in adding depth and I chose to slightly favor the femininity of the look.

No matter my outfit, I almost never go anywhere without my layered cross and wishbone necklaces, my arm candy including my watch and my bracelets collected over the years and given to me by friends and family and my ring given to me as a gift from my parents. Try layering your jewelry with pieces that hold sentimental value to you. Not only will it polish any look, but it also aids in displaying your character, just like your personal style does.

Get My Look: 1. A poncho. 2. An elastic statement belt. 3. A pair of nude booties.

What is going to class if not an opportunity to show off your outfit? One should always take the long route to sociology lecture because it is the time to show the world that you’re more than just an overworked college student: you’re a Fashionista/o. In this season known for chunky sweaters and Frye boots, this Fashionista makes a point to pumpkin spice up her wardrobe, and always gets it right.

The distressed boyfriend jean has been seen everywhere these past few months. This Fashionista’s decision to pair her loose but fitted Madewell jeans with a dressy RBL silk top creates a trendy contrast and elongates her legs when tucked in the front. Boyfriend jeans are frequently coupled with slip-on sneakers, but this Fashionista elected for a lizard print leather open-toe ankle bootie from House of Harlow 1960, making this look entirely her own. Her yellow bag instantly draws your attention, and incorporates an essential color for fall fashion. Accessory wise, she finishes her look with a Tiffany & Co. necklace and bracelet, a kate spade watch and oversized Prada sunglasses. These, and her velvet Brandy Melville hat all combine in making this such a noteworthy fall outfit.

As we continue to explore different styles, colors, patterns and trends, remember this Fashionista’s willingness to make a statement with her clothing. Her style reflects her bold personality and combines unique pieces that make this look uniquely her own. Let us keep in mind the wise words of the late Oscar de la Renta, “Fashion is about dressing according to what’s fashionable. Style is more about being yourself.”

One Simple Change: If you want to dress this look up for a dinner or night out, add a fitted black blazer and you’ll be set!

Rainy days are no excuse to stop looking like the stylish Fashionista you are. How can you still rock a stylish outfit while walking through a monsoon on campus? With a trendy rain jacket, of course! Rain jackets don’t have to be plain, boring jackets that are only made for protecting you from the rain. They can be so much more than this.

This Fashionista caught my eye as she was walking around campus. I couldn’t help but be drawn in by her adorable bright pink rain jacket. She knew exactly what to wear for a gloomy rainy day and how to look her best while doing it. She is wearing a practical, bright pink Patagonia rain jacket with a warm flannel underneath. She also threw on cream colored leg warmers over black leggings that she tucked into tan, knee-high boots. Her leg warmers are totally unexpected but they add a personal flare of style. Her outfit is very laid back and the pop of bright pink makes it come alive. We all need a pop of color on a dark rainy day and an awesome rain jacket was the perfect spark.

How To: Rocking an awesome outfit on a rainy day is extremely possible, no matter what you think! All you have to do is pick out the perfect rain jacket. They come in all patterns, colors and styles, so don’t hold back. Pair a standout jacket with a simpler outfit, like leggings and a plain sweater. The color or design in your rain jacket of choice will leave everyone speechless!

AROUND TOWN: Rebecca Aschen

Blush is a fashion and beauty magazine that is circulated through the Fashion Institute of Technology campus. It is entirely student run, written and distributed. This Fashionista and future editor-in-chief wanted to mesh her two interests: her love of telling stories by way of writing and her interest in fashion and beauty, which is how she became a part of the magazine.

Name: Rebecca Aschen

Role: Senior Editor at Blush magazine

CollegeFashionista: What do you do at Blush magazine?

Rebecca Aschen: I contribute articles, edit other people’s work, act as a liaison between the current editor-in-chief and writers and try to come up with new and interesting content.

CF: What do you look forward to achieving in the next year?

RA: I look forward to stepping into the editor-in-chief role with finesse. I hope to continue to produce quality issues with interesting content. Expanding the volume and variety of content is of utmost importance as well. I hope to increase the presence of Blush on campus and even past that.

CF: Why did you decide to join the Blush team?

RA: Blush is my outlet for writing about the things I love: beauty and fashion. I also loved the camaraderie of working with a whole staff and having common goals as a team.

CF: What is your opinion on the format of Blush?

RA: I think that the print format of the magazine is like going back to the roots. There is nothing like flipping through a physical magazine and absorbing everything. However, I like the way we are integrating online content on our website as well as increasing our social media presence.

Learn More: The fall issue is on newsstands at FIT, and new content is up on Blush’s website.
