STYLE GURU STYLE: The Trench

Tis’ the season for holiday-themed lattes, cozy sweaters and the one fashion staple I’ve been waiting to bring out all year—the trench coat. Fun history fact: the trench coat was originally developed as an alternative to the heavy serge greatcoats worn by British and French soldiers in the First World War. Who would’ve thought? Nowadays, it’s the perfect stylish fall layering piece for cooler weather. This tan trench coat from Forever 21 is lightweight, so it’s perfect for those climates that haven’t dipped into fall temperatures yet (I’m waiting patiently…).

Beige, black, fitted, loose, crumpled or not, the trench coat has been all of the above and so much more, while remaining a staple piece for every Fashionista. The trench has made a quite a comeback in fashion over the years, but this time, it is softer and more feminine. I decided to pair my trench with all black for a minimalist, chic look. If they invent a darker color, let me know. I’ll probably fill my entire wardrobe with it. I added this bulky silver buckle belt to break up my all-black ensemble. I’m really loving pops of neutral this fall, and in my opinion, black and tan is the perfect fall/winter color combination. My distressed jeans and lace-up flats give this look dimension and texture. It’s perfect for job interviews or even just a coffee date with a friend. For a nighttime look, throw this trench over a slip dress with thigh-high boots. I’m definitely looking forward to coming up with different ways to style the trench coat this winter!
