STYLE GURU STYLE: Take It From The Guys

Summertime is truly ideal for any stylish individual. Some of you might have time off, blissfully spending your days however you so choose. The rest of us are either taking classes, working an/or interning. As June is underway, you might find yourself trying to stock up (some more frequently than others) on items with lighter weight and shorter hemlines. Lately, my ensembles have had a “borrowed from the boys” vibe. With only a few simple and versatile staples, I’ve been putting a twist on my usual summer wardrobe. They definitely match my mood for the season perfectly: relaxed and carefree.

First and foremost of these must-haves is a plaid linen blazer. It proved layering can be cool as there was finally a glimpse of summer’s hot weather in Upstate NY. My look was inspired by Marissa Webb’s resort 2016 collection. The designs resembled menswear without losing the glamour or feminized aesthetic that we as women want in our wardrobes. I chose to style this blazer with my favorite boyfriend jeans and some super feminine pieces to make it all mesh together.

Styling this menswear item can be flawlessly executed for summer with these helpful tips. Try to remember long and loose versus short and tight. When you sport baggy pants such as boyfriend jeans, pair them with a more severe shoe. This blazer was balanced by the glittery shoes/accessories paired with a tighter V-neck T-shirt underneath. The undershirt kept proper proportions so I wasn’t lost underneath the oversized exterior pieces. Consciously keeping equal numbers of feminine and masculine items in your look will keep it casual, chic and on trend. If you are a vintage connoisseur like me, let this dual as a rad way to make an older menswear piece au courant. If not, you can always go right for the items like those seen in the collection of utilitarian glam mentioned above.

As a disclaimer, the heels I chose were clearly not made for walking! However, thankfully, if you are in need of a different heel height for busy day/walking, you do not need to settle for flip flops. Simply opt for a pair of pointed-toe flats or printed espadrilles (try mixing prints). Without any doubt or hesitation, comfy footwear is the way to go.

The fit of the blazer combined with the loose denim and jeweled footwear gives it versatility for transitioning through your day’s agenda. This allows you to appear fashion conscious, confident and neither over nor under dressed. For your summer style, I can only suggest to keep it relaxed and minimalistic; leave the rest to your imagination. Taking all of this advice and clothing from Fashionistos lately reminds me of the amazing street style I saw this time last year at Pitti Uomo. Alas, incorporating a linen blazer or a sport coat into my wardrobe this season will have to suffice for now.
