STYLE GURU STYLE: Embellish And Flow

Spring has officially sprung! It should be dress and sandals weather now, right? Not quite. It has taken a little while to warm up here in upstate New York, but I’m too impatient to wait for “proper” spring weather—I want to start wearing floral and skirts now! In this outfit, I was inspired by Elie Saab’s spring 2016 couture collection, which featured flowing dresses with beaded, lace and floral embellishments.

The inspiration for this show was “a turn-of-the-last-century Englishwoman on a trip to the subcontinent,” according to Vogue. I was immediately drawn to this collection because I love feminine details like lace, but also because the whole look of the show felt timeless. The models looked effortlessly elegant, and that’s what I strive for in my personal style. I also liked the idea of mixing more rigid and structured details with the flowing textures and materials—it creates such a beautiful juxtaposition.

The collection was mostly composed of neutral colored dresses, like white, beige, blush, gray and lavender, but included a few pops of cobalt blue. I made my outfit a similar color palette, wearing mostly white, gray and brown, and added a pop of color with my mint scarf.

I took inspiration from the intricate details and fabrics with a lace textured skirt. The shape of the skirt matches the flowing structures of the dresses. Plus, the texture of the scarf—light and airy—also play to same vibe.

Something that contrasts with the flowing structures of these looks were the metallic accessories. Models wore silver combat boots with matching shoulder bags and belts. I added a metallic touch with a simple silver beaded necklace. The silver ties in with the gray skirt and tights.

Finally, makeup: the models in Elie Saab’s show wore natural makeup, with groomed brows and pink lips. I did the same, wearing a light pink lip color.

While it often seems like runway trends are something of another universe and there is no practical way to wear them in our everyday lives, that is definitely not true. No matter the weather and time frame, we can always take inspiration and up our personal style.

Get My Look: 1. Feminine skirt. 2. White shirt. 3. Pink lipstick.
