STYLE GURU STYLE: Cool Kid

When getting dressed, people usually don’t aim to dress like children; however, incorporating childlike details into an outfit is a unique trend that is now being seen on the runway and even on the streets. I took inspiration from Peter Jensen’s resort 2016 collection as this has a childlike whimsy that is fun and fresh, while still looking like an adult clothing. The collection features pastel colors, ankle socks, ice cream motifs, cute collars and funky prints, all of which can all be incorporated into an every day look to add some fanciful flare.

When choosing my outfit that was inspired by this collection, I aimed to capture the childlike quality, but also look sophisticated at the same time, just as Peter Jensen had done in his show. All of the looks in his collection have loose and flared silhouettes, which is a characteristic I knew I wanted to incorporate into my look since it was so prominent in the show. Peter Jensen also added edge to the looks by pairing them with chunky, black shoes, so I knew shoes would play a big part in making this trend work for a fashionable college student.

I replicated the Peter Jensen vibe by layering a dress in a pastel lavender color over a black shirt with a dramatic white collar. The dress has lace and ruffle details and allows the collar on the shirt to really stand out while the feminine and cute dress contrasts with the dark, structured shirt in a way that brings the Peter Jensen collection to mind. I completed the look with heavy, dark-colored boots which added the necessary edge to to the ensemble. I kept the accessories at a minimum as to not complicate the look and to keep the simplicity that we all loved as a kid.

Get My Look: 1. A dress in a pastel color. 2. A shirt with a unique collar. 3. Chunky black boots.
