STYLE GURU STYLE: Cool in Culottes

With the weather starting to warm up, I tend to rely on one of many dresses, but I wanted to get out of my comfort zone with this outfit. As someone who leans on the shorter side, I have always been afraid to try culottes until I found this pair at H&M. I refused to leave the store without them.

However, with culottes comes the difficult task of styling them appropriately. The important thing is to play with proportions of the outfit. I personally prefer to stay away from loose fitting shirts. It keeps the outfit from swallowing you up in fabric. I also wanted to keep the outfit neutral. I started off with my black culottes and decided to throw on a simple white T-shirt with black writing. The shirt tied in the black and gave some interest without being overly distracting. Although this day was particularly warm, I added a denim jacket to give some added texture and color, but not too distressed keeping the focus on the gorgeous culottes. I think it really helps complete the outfit, and denim jackets are one of my favorite pieces. Since I am short, I wanted to elongate the legs by wearing a pair of nude block heels, though you could swap the heels for loafers or mules.

I felt chic and fun in this transitional outfit, perfect for those chillier days or even an internship. Plus, it’s always good to try something new and different from your normal wardrobe.

Whether you have been a culotte lover or not, there is likely a pair calling your name. You can stick to the neutrals or go even crazier with a fun patterned pair. I have a feeling culottes are soon going to be taking over my closet.
