STYLE GURU STYLE: Black is the New Black

For some, the first sign of fall in the air is a bitter realization that summer is officially over. For others, the absence of warm weather is a joyous time to start layering. And layering means that we get to wear more of the clothes we love at one time. Let’s be honest, there’s nothing better than wearing your favorite shirt, sweater and jacket at the same time. Although it is not that extremely cold yet here in Fredericksburg, Virginia, we are starting to get colder weather and I am taking full advantage of it.

I’m going to be honest with you guys, I originally had no idea what I was going to wear when preparing for this article. After some contemplation, I figured I would go ultra-simple and really try to capture my every day style. So, I really love the look I ended up with and it’s definitely something I wear every day, not just on special occasions.

I started this look with a super simple, oversized black Hanes sweatshirt. This gives my outfit those comfy fall vibes, but because it is black, instead of gray or white, it’s not too slouchy. Then I added my favorite black denim. I swear, the jeans fit so good they feel like sweats and as an added bonus, they were super affordable. So, after I had my monochromatic base, it was time to add some accessories that would give the outfit a pop.

To add a little bit of femininity, I layered a few dainty gold necklaces. I thought this would be a good way to break up the darkness of the black, especially around my face. It just so happens that this necklace matched my favorite Fossil watch that I wear almost every day and also gives me a little extra sparkle against all the black. Last, but not least, I threw on a pair of high-top Converse in white. I am obsessed with the contrast between the shoes and the rest of the outfit. They really balance the outfit out without being distracting.

So, don’t be afraid to add that bright pop of color to any out, but black will never go out of style.
