STYLE GURU BIO: Molly Mattox

Hello Fashionistas and Fashionistos! My name is Molly Mattox and I am a freshman studying Fashion Design at Radford University. I plan on double-majoring in Fashion Merchandising and Fashion Design with a minor in Journalism and I knew CollegeFashionista and I would be a perfect fit.

I was born on an Air Force base in Landstuhl, Germany, but was shipped back to North America in a box when I was three weeks old (I was actually in a plane, but yes I was in a box). I grew up in the town of Blacksburg, not more than 25 to 30 minutes away from the University I’m attending. I played with Barbies, Polly Pockets, Lego’s and cars. My childhood was interesting, to say the least.

My world hasn’t always been about fashion. Throughout elementary and middle school, I strived to be just like the “cool” kids. I wanted everyone to like me and I wanted more than anything to fit in. “Fitting in” didn’t come naturally to me. I didn’t have money like the popular kids. I shopped at second-hand stores and Goodwill my whole life. I was ashamed of what I wore, and my creativity was stifled. I wasn’t able to truly find myself. Growing up being the last of five kids means only one thing, hand-me-downs. I never got to express myself the way I wanted to because I always received someone else’s expression.

It wasn’t until about sophomore year of high school where I truly focused more on what I was happy and confident wearing. I stopped trying to conform to what everyone else was thinking and wearing. It didn’t matter to me, as much, what everyone else thought about how I presented myself. Through fashion, I learned how to identify myself and express myself. I don’t know where or who I’d be without fashion.

My style changes day to day. I like to take fashion risks. I love boho, vintage, minimalist and grunge styles. My outfit usually depends on how I am feeling that day. In this outfit I am wearing more of a boho style. The maxi dress is originally from Forever 21 but I bought it at Plato’s Closet. I tried it on and instantly loved the fit and design. My cross-body handbag came from Target and it is a great buy because of its ability to match mostly anything. The black zip up booties were also from Target and are great because they give height but are also very easy to walk in. For accessories, I am wearing a charm wish necklace, simple bracelets (braided and leather) and a few rings. Top off the look with a classic jean jacket, and you’re ready to hit the town!

As the classic Gianni Versace once said, “Don’t make fashion own you, but you decide what you are and what you want to express.”

I can’t wait to see what CollegeFashionista has in store for me!
