STYLE GURU BIO: Joyce Liang

Why hello there Fashionistas/os! My name is Joyce, and I’m a freshman at UC San Diego, studying Communications with a minor in Marketing and Film and Production.

Originally from the Bay Area, I immediately fell in love with San Diego once I moved here for college. Nothing beats the nice beaches, the shorts and flip flops kind of weather, as well as the calm and serene vibe while walking around campus and the streets. When I’m not scouting for new beauty and fashion blogs and videos on YouTube, I enjoy spontaneous adventures, being outdoors and being a busy bee. My hobbies include things that allow me to explore my creativity, such as video editing and writing. At the end of the day, being surrounded by family and friends is the best.

My obsession with fashion began when I was a third grader who would rebel against my parents dressing me and sneak my own clothes in my backpack. The obsession heightened when I began watching Lauren Conrad on The Hills. I became a young sixth grader in a small city in the Bay Area, fantasizing about a life in the city of Los Angeles with a fashion internship! And after being introduced to Project Runway by my older sister, I pulled out a sketchbook and began drawing different outfits that I saw on the show.

My style has evolved from girly and sweet to a combination of girly, edgy, simple and bohemian. Comfort and feeling confident in what I wear is a big component to how I choose my outfits. I used to have a terrible habit of binge shopping whenever I saw a sale at H&M, and then I wouldn’t wear any of the clothes. But as I got older, through trial and error, I became smarter with choices and more aware of what works for me.

I adore how fashion is a way for me to express my own individuality. I’m currently in love with bold statement necklaces paired with simple shirts and dresses and, of course, floral prints! I’ve been going through a phase of wearing dresses because I like how easy it is to just pop them on, layer and dress them up or down. It is a definite that my style will be constantly evolving, and I continue to find inspiration through other fashion bloggers and people I see on the streets. I’m always willing to try new things and experiment, and as Tim Gunn would say in Project Runway, we’ve just got to “make it work!”

I’m excited to be a part of the CollegeFashionista team and getting to meet all of you! I will be venturing out and writing about the different styles I see in both San Diego and the Bay Area this summer season.
