You might be surprised to learn that I didn’t stop this Fashionista because of her silver jacquard shorts or contrasting fuzzy sweater. It wasn’t even because of her very Chloé-like buckle boots that complement the chain strap of her purse. Though all of those elements earn her major points, it’s her beanie that establishes a sense of style many girls covet.
Her cap is totally casual and offers a touch of laidback flair to an otherwise sophisticated ensemble. It also happens to be the accessory my sister and I fought over during holiday break. As soon as I got a hold of her hunter green cable knit from North Face, I refused to give it up. I’ve been wearing it with everything — from sweatpants to denim and tees — and it’s not just to cover up my lack of hair maintenance.
Sporting a really cool beanie is worth the battle through the cold weather and it’s worth a splurge every now and then, too. And yes, it was also worth the fight with my sister (who, much to my satisfaction, settled for her college embroidered one that looks very similar to this Fashionista’s).
But just because I’ve got one hat on my head doesn’t mean my search has ceased. When it comes to beanies, I’ve decided you can never have enough, especially since it’s winter and our ears are cold. With the wide assortment that’s available, it only makes sense to stock up on various styles. You can hold off on adding to your shoe collection until spring.
If you like stripes and the cutesy addition of a pom-pom, shop Free People for a cap with a pop of chartreuse or River Island for a look that borders on patriotic. Marc By Marc Jacobs makes a wool version that’s printed with awesome shades, and if you’re into the whole slogan thing, the Oui/Non detail on this ASOS pick is really cute.
One final piece of advice: the next time you fall in love with a beanie, buy two and gift one to your sister (or roommate). You’ll avoid those “Hey, that’s mine!” arguments, so you’ll feel all warm and cozy on the inside, too.
