Style Advice of the Week

I don’t think there’s anything more beautiful than when fashion and travel collide. If you’re anything like me, you take inspiration from anyone, anything and anywhere — that’s why travelling is of the utmost importance to me. It is continuously giving me the opportunity to run around the world seeking beauty. The question I always have on my mind is, “Where to next?” which makes it difficult to concentrate in lectures sometimes.

When being introduced to a new culture, or a new city, I always try pinpointing how their fashion scene is constructed. Fashion has the ability to express individuals and cultures, and there’s something so remarkable about that. I’ll be the first to admit, when travelling and having to live out of a backpack for a few weeks or even months, it’s pretty difficult to keep fashionable. After a while, you get pretty tired of everything you own. So Fashionistas, this is my challenge to you. If you’re travelling in the next few months, try mixing, matching and layering your items. You never know what amazing outfit will transpire out of getting a little creative with the existing items you have!

I spotted this Fashionista patiently waiting for a lecture. Initially, it was her gray foldover maxi skirt from Gap combined with the denim jacket (with plaid detailing on the shoulders) from Forever 21 that caught my attention. However, it was when we began chatting that the best part of her entire outfit was revealed: a traveler’s backpack that has patches from every country she has traveled to. Indonesia, South Korea, Cambodia and so many more. A Fashionista and a lover of travelling? What more could you ask for? Immediately I realized this Fashionista’s style embodied that of one who travels. Now this may be odd, but I’ve always had the impression that a young Fashionista, with a wanderlust craving, has a style that is carefree and bohemian. This Fashionista features both of those qualities.

From my own travels abroad, whether it was a semester abroad in Australia or hiking through the mountains of Turkey one summer, I’ve learned the key to a stylish ensemble is layering and this Fashionista nails it. The easy removal and adding on of items is crucial for someone who is continuously moving around. Under her denim jacket, she layers a pale purple hoodie and cropped knit sweater. But it’s the emerald circle scarf from Urban Outfitters that tops off the layered look. I’ve always loved circle scarfs for their ability to create coverage and make a bundled up outfit look sophisticated. And lastly, the Fashionista is wearing one of the most stylish shoes of the moment, brown leather Blundstone Chelsea boots, which are perfect for any traveler who is always on the move and dreaming of their next destination.

Continue to travel, Fashionistas and Fashionistos. Go chase after new adventures while looking ultra fab. Bring essential items like this Fashionista’s denim jacket, maxi skirt and Chelsea boots. And don’t forget to splurge on garments that are traditional to the country you are travelling in and pay attention to how locals dress. Take that back home with you and apply it to your everyday style.
