STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Pretty In Plaid

This Fashionista knows that you can stay warm but still look chic. Her puffer coat protects against the cold D.C. winds, while the rest of her outfit is preppy and put together. There have been too many times where I’ve shivered when going out for the night (or day) sans coat for the sake of fashion. Oh, and the time I ruined my ballet flats in a monsoon. For a long day of classes, the sacrifice is rarely (if ever) worth it, especially when you can look cute and stay warm in an outfit like this one.

This Fashionista stays true to her preppy Connecticut roots in a gingham button- down and a Vineyard Vines belt. The shirt dresses up a pair of jeans but could also be worn for a more formal occasion with a flared skirt. The belt is whimsical and fun, especially when paired with a simple button-down and jeans. The light wash denim looks great with caramel leather boots.

Her look is comprised of a few key classic pieces that every collegiate, preppy or not, should have in her closet. First, everyone needs a great pair of jeans. As much as I like my lululemons, jeans will always be in style. What’s more is that they go with absolutely everything. While I normally go for dark wash, the lighter wash looks great here with a darker blue shirt and has more of a laid back, casual feel. A slim-fit button-down should be in everyone’s rotation because it looks instantly polished, even with jeans. Riding boots are yet another classic that look chic with any winter outfit.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “I’m generally pretty preppy and I like to stick to classic pieces. I would say not to be afraid to try bold colors and prints, since they’re a great way to spice up your look.”
