ALL IN THE DETAILS: The New Neutral

Many of my friends refuse to wear black and blue together for fear of looking like a “bruise.” In high school, one of our school colors was navy, and girls would always avoid wearing navy T-shirts with black pants of any kind. I understand that sometimes there are color combinations that just do not go together; but I think this stands for all colors, not just navy. Navy seems to be having major moment. It’s a sophisticated update from basic gray or black. When I think of navy, one of my first thoughts is the wardrobe of the ever-popular Spencer Hastings from Pretty Little Liars; she’s so chic!

When I spotted this Fashionista, I thought her look was classic and stunning. The color combination of navy and black worked perfectly in her favor in this case. Each element of the ensemble was so simple, yet together they all made such an impact. Her navy peacoat is undoubtedly the main focal point of this look. I love the peplum aspect of the waistline, as well as the turtleneck cut of the neckline. Pairing the coat with a black cross-body bag as well as black knee-high boots took the look over the edge in the right way. Plus, the gold hardware on the bag and boots added a rockstar edge. She has created a clean and classy neutral color palette for her outerwear staples, in which she can change up by adding bold scarves and fabulous beanies.

How To: Already bought a basic black winter jacket? No problem! Grab a navy scarf or hat to subtlety incorporate this trend into your look. If you’re in the market for a new pair of rain boots, navy is my go-to color (and another great way to incorporate navy into your wardrobe). Feeling daring with your makeup? Try out navy eyeliner. The opportunities are endless!
