ALL IN THE DETAILS: The Great Escape

Spring may be fast approaching, but to a student, it might not seem quick enough! As we look forward to warmer weather and to spring break, we tend to lapse into transient daydreams, our minds taking us far beyond the walls of the familiar, to exotic environments and on enlivening journeys. Although spring may still be far off, and with it much needed respite, the Fashionista can still use her clothing arsenal to evoke the getaways that the mind’s eye seeks. Though they may not be complete substitutes for the real thing, garments can create a mini-vacation for the wearer and have the same sort of rejuvenating effects on the winter-worn student.

If you are wondering what I mean by this, let me direct you to this Fashionista’s inspired accessories, namely her graphic bag and patterned scarf. The oriental-inspired designs of the two pieces are reminiscent of a Mediterranean tour; the vivid red scarf with floral details evokes a warm and alluring Moroccan spirit, while the domed city scape on the bag recalls picturesque Mediterranean cities, such as Pyrgos, Greece or Haram City, Egypt. Together, they lead the Fashionista on a visual tour from one end of the Mediterranean Sea to the other. This spirit of the Grand Tour was also a theme in Valentino’s spring 2015 ready-to-wear collection. Inspired by the Italian peninsula and drawing on floral, arabesque and oceanic motifs, the collection is a perfect example of the ability of clothes to transport the wearer.

The accessories also serve to enhance the Fashionista’s outfit by introducing warmth through the colors and complexity in the patterns. Without these graphic pops, the light tints of her ensemble would come across as washed out; instead, the pale foundation punctuates the vivacious accessories. The accessories also help to ameliorate a typically taboo combination: two denim pieces in similar washes. Although the golden rule of thumb for denim on denim looks is to mix weights and washes, if designers like Fendi can do monochromatic denim, why can’t a savvy Fashionista give it a try? By incorporating bold accessories, chic shoes, edgy jewelry or jazzy prints, one can break up the block of denim and create a daring, modern look. This venture is not for the faint of heart, but overall, I quite enjoy the vintage vibe of this Fashionista’s outfit. It breathes with an indie, artsy air, complementary to the accessories’ wistful spirit of travel.

How To: If you’re stuck on campus but dreaming of your own Grand Tour, let your clothing transport you! One way to incorporate a little exotic flair into your outfit is by selecting garments or accessories with floral or arabesque patterns; also, bright, saturated colors can evoke the spirit of a Mediterranean retreat. Finally, take advantage of the approaching spring weather by investing in some breezy dresses or maxi skirts that will have you feeling like you’re already on your getaway!
