ALL IN THE DETAILS: Ostentatious Adulting

Life has various phases, each with its own standards for clothes. When you were a toddler, you got to wear absolutely anything you wanted. Going out to the zoo? That’s a perfect time for a princess dress or cowboy ensemble. Then you got older and started school. You started to feel the pressures to conform to what was socially cool at the time. I won’t give an example because depending on when that was, it could look very different! Then, you’re officially an adult. You’ve made it to the promise land of independence and freedom. However, this comes with a new set of standards. Being an adult means that you’ve got a workplace dress code to abide by. Everyone will have a different experience but the idea is basically the same. Let’s dive into the generic world of business casual.

In order to break the rules, you must first learn them. This piece of wisdom will get us started. I once had an account services professor that gave me a tip. If you really don’t know where to begin when it comes to dressing for the professional world, go to Nordstrom. Make sure you saved up some money, ask for a personal stylist and pick something from their suggestions. Once you’ve got a good understanding of what you “should” look like, then start adding or subtracting to add your personal flare.

The trick is to make sure you’ve put thought into the details. This week’s Fashionisto is a good example of that. He’s a membership director of AD 2 Tampa Bay and a senior marketing strategist at Bisk so you know he’s got to look the part. Luckily, he believes that what you wear should be reflective of who you are. In this case, he’s a tech aficionado that loves to be comfortable.

He’s featured in some comfy Polo shoes with crazy patterned Express Men socks. A Chaps oxford button-up goes nicely with a neutral gray pant. He finishes his look with a pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses, Pepa Jack hat and Fitbit Alta to really show his own unique style and interests.

So remember that just because you’re entering the working world of adults, it doesn’t mean you have to be boring. Let your personal style shine through with the details!
