ALL IN THE DETAILS: Cool Dad

Long before Katy Perry and Riff Raff, long before Britney and Justin, there was the denim on denim look known lovingly (-ish) as the “Canadian tuxedo.” Made popular by ’80s heartthrobs and ’90s dads, for so long the overuse of denim was seen as fashion suicide.

But within the last few years, the denim on denim look has not only become acceptable, but widely embraced by Fashionistas and Fashionistos alike. This Fashionista took the trend to an entirely new level with a denim on denim on (wait for it) denim look. That’s right—that is three uses of denim in a single look. That means three times the fabulousness.

The key to successfully pulling off this look? Mixing and matching the shades of denim is essential to making sure you don’t look like you are wearing a denim unitard. First, this Fashionista sported white skinny jeans on the bottom. This winter’s hottest trend is white. So this is a great way to infuse two trends into one single look.

She then continued to build her denim look on top by wearing contrasting darker dyes. Her button-down is a traditional chambray. This is a must-have item for any Fashionista and Fashionisto. A button-down chambray is super versatile and the definition of a college closet staple. She then a navy denim anorak over her top to keep her warm. The darker navy is a great complement to the lighter chambray.

So instead of gawping at your dad next time he walks out in his favorite 20-year-old denim on denim look, applaud him. Let your dear old dad and this Fashionista inspire you step up your denim game this winter.

How To: With some much denim, it is important to balance out the look with some other elements. Suede booties and a stack of bracelets are great ways to accessorize this look in a subtle and successful manner.
