WHAT TO WEAR: Summer

Summer in Knoxville is unlike any other season in this quaint East Tennessee city. Autumn, winter and spring all have redeeming qualities, but it’s summer when everyone goes outside, bikes around downtown and really enjoys what the weather has to offer. Thankfully, that also means that there’s a lot of sartorial action going on, which is why I loved talking to and photographing this Fashionista.

I spotted her in the Old City, walking with a few friends. While her outfit initially is pretty basic, it epitomizes the perfect summer ensemble especially in a small town like Knoxville that still gets super hot in the summer. Instead of stripping down to the typical shorts and T-shirt outfit, this Fashionista took a basic tube dress with an alluring slit and paired it with tailored ankle flats and no accessories at all.

You’re probably asking, “What’s so special about a black dress and flats?” Well, the fact of the matter is that this Fashionista’s outfit is so simple and easy that it’s different from all the accessorized, colorful, patterned outfits I so often see during the summer. Instead of trying to over do it with colors, patterns and loud accessories, she simply stuck to a basic black maxi dress and pretty flat shoes and created an ingeniously pretty outfit.

I think that fashion and style sometimes gets muddled by “things.” Sure, I love a good statement necklace just as much as the next person. But sometimes not wearing a necklace at all can make an even bigger style statement. So, take a hint from this Fashionista and dress down your wardrobe this summer. You never know, your simplicity just might open your eyes to a whole new world of style possibilities.

One Simple Change: To transition this look from day to night, pair a simple black dress with a pair of basic platform heels. Instead of drawing attention to just one part of your outfit, this combination will have your whole look speak for itself.
