WHAT TO WEAR: Layerin’ Up

November through February are brutally cold months here in Nebraska. Walking to class and braving through the chilly 15 degree temperatures and harsh windchill is truly dreadful. Because the temperatures are freezing, it’s common to see students on my campus bundled up in as many sweatpants and sweatshirts as they can squeeze themselves into. I don’t blame them! It’s so much more tempting to throw on a pair of warm sweats in the morning for an 8 a.m. class than it is putting the effort into creating more of a thought-out, stylish, warm look. It’s rare to see a student sport a stylish outfit that is warm, fashionable, and inexpensive during the winter months because of this.

You can imagine my excitement then when I spotted this Fashionista on campus—no sweatshirt or sweatpants! She uses layers to her advantage by styling a basic striped turtleneck under a warm bomber paired with a classic denim jacket that can never go out of style. I love the way the colors work together to give the look a more casual “walking from class” feel. Also, I shouldn’t forget to mention how perfect her shoes are for walking through the thin sheets of snow and keeping her feet warm. Not only are they super cute but they encompass functionality too! The ridges on the bottom help on the long 20 minute hikes to class. Her black leggings also do a good job at keeping her warm and again help the look overall stay casual.

After spotting her and chatting with her, she inspired me to get a bit more creative with the staples I have in my wardrobe already, by layering to create a fun, new, and warm outfit to wear on the colder days around campus. Just because it’s cold out doesn’t mean we have to sacrifice fashion! Who’s with me Fashionistas?!
