WHAT TO WEAR: Interviews

Many universities hold formal job fairs where numerous companies travel to campus in hopes of meeting prospective employees. At UF, this event is known as Career Showcase. It offers gators a great opportunity to network and explore a position in his or her desired field of work and interest. The organizations that attend Career Showcase are top-tier and they are certainly not looking for cookie cutter individuals.

At times, many students find it hard to express who they are while wearing boring slacks and a plain old formal blazer. Outfits reflect and affect attitude. If you do not feel comfortable in what you are wearing, it will most definitely show.

I spotted this Fashionista, leaving the Career Showcase and she immediately drew my eye. Her confidence and poise radiated through her ever-sleek outfit and I believe she truly made the professional look her own.

Her button-down dress was extremely appropriate for the occasion. The length was perfect, the neckline was just right and the quarter-length sleeves left room for some simple arm candy. The elegant black and gold watch is a traditional accessory that can add professionalism to about any outfit. A simple skinny bangle doesn’t make much of a statement, but when paired correctly, it adds pure taste to the look.

Caged shoes are without a doubt, a new and growing trend. They are absolutely stunning with any outfit! A pair of jeans? Caged heels can elevate your casual-chic look. A cute dress? Caged heels can transform it from simple to fun. A skater skirt? Caged heels! Normally, these shoes are worn to give off a more flirty and fun look so I was surprised to see how well they paired with the sophisticated dress.

This Fashionista told me she thought she expressed her skill set, characteristics and experience really well to the companies at Career Showcase. She was confident and well prepared, but we can’t attribute all of that to simply the outfit. Prepare yourself, practice your elevator speech and search for an outfit that screams “hire me!”

The old cliché certainly does hold true: dress for success!

One Simple Change: When the long professional day comes to a close, turn the dress into something more fun and free. Make the dress a long coat by unbuttoning it and throwing on some cute jeans and a simple top under.
