WHAT TO WEAR: Day to Night

There was a time when our parents would have to send their daughters back upstairs to change because their dresses were a tad on the skimpy side. But have no fear worried mothers and fathers—the dresses these days seem to keep getting longer and longer. It’s a fashion statement that has been around for a while now, and keeps returning in different variations. Spring’s motto was long and lean with hems to the knee (ha), and to the calf and to the floor as well. The spring runway looks of Victoria Beckham, Lanvin and Dior proved the longer look to not just be right, but better. There is something elegant about a longer hem that you simply can’t get when wearing a mini. This trend has proven to stay strong throughout the summer months.

The Fashionista above rocks her mid-calf dress with a black jacket and white Nike shoes. One thing I love about this outfit is that even though she’s wearing a dress, her outfit is still super edgy. She accomplishes this by wearing a laid back shoe and adding some leather accents. These kinds of dresses are so versatile; they can take you from brunch with the gals to even out to drinks with coworkers. Other hem lines you could try in order to achieve this long and lean look are the ankle hem and the high-low asymmetrical hem. And always remember when choosing tops to go with long hemmed skirts, choose ones with longer silhouettes to balance out the proportions.

One Simple Change: You’ve been walking around Soho all day and just realized you only have a couple hours until drinks with friends? Don’t sweat it. Just throw on a leather vest and some black heels and you’re good to go!
