While the New York City streets are still scorching hot, I’m ready to head back to school. That time of year means new classes, Wisconsin Badger football games, pumpkin spice flavored everything and, of course, a little bit of back-to-school shopping. Recently, I’ve found myself flipping through my stacks of magazines, must-read blogs and Style.com to find the hottest trends for the fall 2015 season. One runway collection I’ve drawn tons of inspiration from is the MM6 Maison Margiela pre-fall one. I enjoy the dark color palette, filled with black, gray and jewel tones, the shiny black loafers and the many leather pieces. From oversized graphic sweatshirts to knee-high socks, this collection has me excited to head back to campus and begin bundling up a little bit more. My absolute favorite look from the show is one that features lots of layers.
The layered MM6 Maison Margiela look features a white dress and a shearling-collared jacket with a denim vest over the top of that. I love the mix of textures and the cozy feelings that the combination evokes. I decided to make this look my own and tweak it to fit the hot August weather. I decided to slip into my favorite gray Topshop dress. This dress has an overlay that makes it look like it’s two pieces when it’s really just one dress. I love how this adds the appearance of layers without adding the excess bulk and warmth. Over the top of that, I added my denim vest. To make the look more casual for a day of exploring in the city, I chose to wear a pair of sneakers. To take this look into the fall, all I would need to do is add a fun jacket under my vest. I could try a quilted bomber jacket, my go-to leather one or opt for a fuzzy shearling like in the MM6 Maison Margiela collection. I think that even a simple cardigan or knit sweater could make great layers for this look.
Overall, this recreated ensemble is the perfect outfit for a casual summer day. However, I’m anxious for the leaves to fall and classes to commence so I can begin to really layer up my looks!
