STYLE GURU STYLE: Velvet Underground

The recent runway show from Vera Wang was quite revolutionary. The brand’s namesake, prominently known for designing gorgeous wedding gowns, has expanded her signature style of modern design and traditional elegance into ready-to-wear collections. Wang herself has stated the benefits of designing ready-to-wear: a designer has much more room to experiment and express their personal aesthetic. As for her Hollywood clientele, Vera Wang pieces can be seen on everyone, from fellow designer Victoria Beckham to Chelsea Clinton.

Velvet, once the staple fabric of fashion connoisseurs and rock stars alike, is back in mode for 2015. Its revival has definitely come about through the ever-so-popular return of ’90s fashion. Vera Wang’s collection, however, brings a professional aesthetic with its use of the moody material. These aren’t the crushed velvet jumpers of your childhood. They’ve been adapted for the professional Fashionista/o. In her collection, Vera Wang’s runway models sport black velvet jackets, long vests, casual cropped tops and my personal favorite, a midi skater skirt.

For my interpretation, I donned an all-black ensemble to emphasize the presence of various fabrics. My fitted turtleneck contrasts with the style of my velvet pants, which serve as my outfit’s statement piece. I figured if I was going to throwback to the ’90s by wearing velvet, I should really go for a vintage vibe with these retro flared bottoms. This type of fit, however, requires a heeled shoe to properly show off the wide legs. My wedges, also continuing the black theme, do the trick. I kept my accessories very minimalistic, wearing only one silver ring. Of course, I also wore my black puffy jacket to stay warm outside.

Get My Look: 1. Plush velvet flare pants. 2. A slick black turtleneck. 3. Shoes with a substantial heel.
