STYLE GURU STYLE: Tomboy-Chic

By combining feminine pieces with more masculine ones, Stella Ishii presented a modern twist on tomboy looks in her 6397 pre-fall collection. Boyfriend jeans paired with simple T-shirts and loose dresses, sweatshirt ponchos and denim jumpsuits were a few of the looks in this tomboy-inspired collection. And a couple of pieces, specifically the straight silk dresses, showed that Ishii was incorporating more feminine shapes into the brand’s otherwise tomboyish aesthetic. The collection’s looks included simple and must-have pieces for winter and spring—a good pair of boyfriend jeans, denim dresses and cozy ponchos.

I have really gotten into wearing loose fitting boyfriend jeans over the past few months, so I, of course, fell in love with her tomboy-inspired looks instantly. I have always been a fan of simplicity when it comes to one’s outfits, which is another thing I loved about the collection—nothing was over the top, and it included everyday looks I could picture seeing around campus.

I wanted to recreate these simple, everyday looks I saw in the collection, so I went to my closet and picked out my favorite pair of Gap boyfriend jeans. These loose fitting jeans were definitely a big part of the runway show, and I wanted to build the rest of my outfit around them. I kept the other base pieces in my outfit simple by wearing a basic black T-shirt and a simple gray belt.

But I also wanted to incorporate some feminine pieces into my look, just as Ishii did with her silk dresses, so I wore my favorite pearl colored vintage jacket. The feminine structure and shape of the jacket balanced out the loose fit of the jeans, and the denim wash and pearl color complemented each other so well. To complete the look, I wore a pair of black pointy heels. The shoes added another feminine touch to the outfit and made the overall look a little dressier.

It’s really easy to combine feminine and masculine pieces, and that’s what I liked about Ishii’s collection. Her looks were simple and versatile, and you can do so much with every piece, especially with the boyfriend jeans! Add a sweater and some sneakers for a great look for class, or wear a structured jacket and some heels for a fancier nighttime look.
