STYLE GURU STYLE: The Paper Bag Will Not Go To “Waist”

One of my fondest memories from this semester as a Style Guru was participating in a talk with 7 For All Mankind. I was thrilled when they replied, “We are really loving the paper bag waist,” to my Tweet asking what their favorite silhouette of the season was. And, how could you disagree? If you are not too familiar with the silhouette, imagine a paper lunch bag that you would squeeze near the top and while the majority of the bag balloons out on the bottom, what is left at the top sprouts out. This type of waist is both flattering and unique as you have your cinched waist and the twist of gathered material that peeps over the top to sprinkle in a bit of charm.

This type of waist has not only transcended the denim industry, it has made the runway its home. One of my favorite adaptations of the skirt is seen in the Veronique Branquinho spring 2015 ready-to-wear collection. The collection was effortless and subtly abstract. Yet, I felt drawn in by nautical rope belts that twisted around the waists of the skirts and the consistent monochromatic color schemes, which transitioned from one ensemble to the next. Baranquinho revolutionized the denim on denim trend with look 17.

I decided to emulate look 17 with a brown and white seersucker skirt with a denim blouse and lace up espadrilles. Whether seersucker is your cup of tea or not, the paper bag waist is certainly a trend worth trying!

Get My Look: 1. A paper bag skirt. 2. A denim shirt. 3. Lace-up espadrilles.
