STYLE GURU STYLE: The Mod Squad

“Basically, I’m trying to make men more sensitive and women more stronger,” said Miuccia Prada. A quote the designer stayed true to in Miu Miu’s pre-fall 2016 collection. In this collection, there was a combination of bold and bright hues of green, blue and orange that went against masculine pieces like belted trench coats and pinstripe jackets.

The show was nostalgic as each look gave off a ’60s vibe. This was a time when unisex clothing was popular, so designs for men and women’s clothing matched exactly. The Miu Miu collection showed brocade printed pants and skirts in bold hues came down the runway paired with tights of the same hue. I paired this same strength and coyness to achieve a look that is street style worthy.

The trench coat is a classic piece. Reinventions with variations in color, print and length allows this piece to be relevant year after year. Starting with my outerwear, I stayed in the same color palette by wearing green. This oversized thrifty coat is my look’s focal point. The shoulders are raised and slightly padded, similar to the broad shoulders and large lapels in Miu Miu’s designs.

I chose to continue using their bold color palette. Underneath my coat, I have an orange, black and tan brocade-printed mini skirt. This skirt instantly reminded me of the mini skirts worn for the ’60s mod trend. Miu Miu is well-known for mixing prints and textures and pairing unlikely colors. I chose to neutralize my look with nude and black. I paired my skirt with a beige sleeveless turtleneck and a pair of black, sheer tights. Adorning my feet are black and white oxfords with tassels. Finishing off this look, I am wearing e.l.f.’s wine lipstick and my dad’s high school class ring. Authentic vintage pieces from family always add a nice, personal touch to a vintage-inspired look.

Get My Look: 1. A long trench coat. 2. A printed mini skirt. 3. A pair of oxfords.
