STYLE GURU STYLE: The Cold Front

One of the biggest trends this season, especially as we head into these colder months, has been the puffer jacket. It can be dressed up or dressed down and can be styled either feminine or masculine. As seen by Kenneth Cole New York’s fall 2014 ready-to-wear collection, it has been a high fashion staple in the runways. The show features multiple puffer jackets with different textures and fall colors such as black and burgundy. In addition, the coats were paired with various sweaters, skirts and boots that were simple colors such as black and white.

As the weather is becoming drastically colder, I wanted to find a way to recreate these runway looks to better fit the season. I decided to make the puffer jacket the statement piece while also adding more neutral, slightly cool-toned accessories to give the jacket more dimension. My puffer jacket is fairly simple and I cinched it at the waist to give it a more feminine look. I also styled it with a black turtleneck underneath, which is a good alternative for scarves in the winter. I added a cool-toned handbag and hat to provide a subtle textural contrast to the outfit, which they also paired the puffer jackets with in the Kenneth Cole New York collection. Since I wanted my overall outfit to be largely understated like the runway show with a prominent color of black, I included black sunglasses and black boots to even out the color I used in my headband and handbag. Lastly, I chose neutral-toned high socks to wear with the boots as a extra layer of warmth.

This collection inspired me to play with texture and color when styling a simple puffer coat this winter. I also learned how the art of layering can look simple and effortless but be very beneficial when staying warm these next few months.

Get My Look: 1. A statement puffer coat. 2. A stylish hat. 3. Simple black boots.
