STYLE GURU STYLE: That ’70s Style

Sophia Loren once said: “A woman’s dress should be like a barbed-wire fence; serving its purpose without obstructing the view.”

There is something about ‘70s fashion that has always spoken to me. I love the bright funky patterns, asymmetrical hemlines and bell bottom jeans. I have always found it difficult however, to wear trends from the ‘70s without looking like I am going to a costume party. Thankfully, alice + olivia’s spring 2015 ready-to-wear show gave me all the inspiration I needed to take those ‘70s trends into the present.

Among all of alice + olivia’s looks, including colorful high-waisted pants, brightly printed midi dresses and long flirty skirts, my favorite look was a vintage inspired handkerchief dress. Loose, flowing and free-fitting handkerchief dresses are perfect for keeping cute and cool during the summer. The asymmetrical hemline is a nice break from typical maxi dresses and gives the dress a ‘70s flare.

I choose a simple black handkerchief dress with a blue aztec print hem. The simplicity of the dress left me with a lot of room to play with accessories, so I added another ‘70s-inspired piece: a big floppy hat. The blue trim on the hat echoes the dress’s blue hem and adds a bit of glamour to the outfit. A gold chunky bracelet and bohemian inspired gold pendent pop against the black dress and a pair of neutral cage heels completes the look.

Though it can be hard to use fashion trends from the past, if you add a few modern elements and wear your outfit with confidence, you can’t go wrong.

Get My Look: 1. A handkerchief dress. 2. A floppy hat. 3. Cage heels.
